Unwanted Nasties

Hi All

Where domestic waste streams are used for AD what is the result of the almost universal use of strong bleaches and disinfectants in toilets etc.. One well known brand claims to kill 99% of all known germs, does that not include our nice friendly methane producing bacteria?

Not normally a problem.

The major concern would be a significant change in pH at the plant.

However, the chemicals used will normally have reacted and their effects been buffered in the much larger volume in the sewage flow while in the sewer travelling to the treatment plant, so by the time they arrive at an STW or AD Plant the effect is not detectable.

The 99% removal of germs claim is when at the concentration when made up to the instructions.
